Foods that strengthen (and weaken) your enamel.
From dairy to citrus — what to eat and what to limit for stronger teeth.

Your diet shapes your smile as much as your toothbrush. Enamel — the hardest substance in the body — can still be eroded by acids and rebuilt by minerals from the foods you eat. Knowing which is which makes a real difference over a lifetime.
Foods that build enamel
Dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt are rich in calcium and casein, both of which strengthen enamel. Leafy greens deliver folic acid and minerals. Crunchy fruits and vegetables — apples, carrots, celery — stimulate saliva, your mouth's natural cleanser. Nuts and seeds add phosphorus, another enamel-building mineral.

Foods to limit
Sugary sodas, sticky candies, and frequent snacking on refined carbs feed the bacteria that cause cavities. Citrus fruits and vinegar-based dressings are healthy in moderation but acidic — rinse with water afterwards. Even sparkling water, while better than soda, is mildly erosive when sipped all day.
A simple rule: eat sweets and acidic foods with a meal rather than as a snack. Saliva flow is highest during meals, neutralizing acid faster and protecting enamel.
